Last Sunday, the wine bar Uva Nera in Florence had organized a special wine tasting event, #UvaNeraLovesChianti, with two Chianti producers present. The producers were Castello del Trebbio and Fattoria di Petreto. It was a fun evening with a lot of friends as well as people, in general, showing up to taste the wines that had been selected for the evening. Costanza, the owner of Uva Nera, often organizes this kind of events so if you are around you should definitely stop by there.
Fattoria di Petreto
This is a small winery which is situated in Rosano, in the town district of Bagno a Ripoli, just on the outskirts of Florence, and the vineyards stretch along the valley of the river Arno. The Fattoria di Petreto has around 75 acres and cultivates white grapes such as Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon Gris as well as the red grapes Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Merlot. When it comes to the wines they produce Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG as well as a red and white IGT Toscana. They also produce the sweet wine Pourriture Noble, i.e. made of the grapes Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon which has been attacked by the noble rot.
The Petreto wines of the evening
The white wine from this winery, Podere Sassaie 2012 IGT Toscana, is a blend of 60% Sauvignon, 35% Semillon, 5% Chenin Blanc and Riesling. It is a wine suitable for aging and it reaches its best potential only after around 4 years. The red wine we tasted from this winery was a 100% Sangiovese IGT Rosso Alessandro Fonseca 2012 from a vineyard they have in Radda in Chianti. It is a classical Sangiovese wine where you feel the predominant part of the red berries.
Castello del Trebbio
The Castello del Trebbio is an estate which was established already in the early Middle Ages and thus has a long history to fall back on. The estate is situated close to Santa Brigida not far from Florence and produces wine, olive oil, and saffron.
The wines from Castello del Trebbio we tasted
First out, was their white wine Bianco della Congiura IGT which is a blend of 55% Pinot Grigio and 45% Riesling. The Pinot Grigio is aged for a short period in barriques while the Riesling is only aged in steel vats. Then we tasted a Chianti Superiore 2014 and he told us that it is the first year this wine is out on the market. It is a wine produced in the Chianti Rufina area but it is not launched as a Chianti Rufina wine but as a Chianti Superiore. It is a blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Ciliegiolo, thus it is a bit smoother than the 100% Sangiovese wines but still a very fresh wine. The third, and last wine for the evening, from this producer was Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG Lastricato which is a 100% Sangiovese wine made of grapes from one single vineyard. The particular thing regarding this wine is that about 20% of the grapes are vinified in amphoras of terracotta while the rest of the grapes are fermented in steel vats. All the grapes are then assembled and aged in wood casks of different sizes for 30 months and then in bottle for a year. Thus it is a very interesting and complex wine.
